Councillor Melanie Bright

Guildford Borough Councillor for Holy Trinity

Melanie has lived in Holy Trinity ward for eight years. She has two young children who both attend local schools. She thinks Guildford is a great place to live, but even though we all know that Guildford is one of the safest towns in Britain sometimes people don’t feel comfortable walking in the town centre. She was elected as a councillor in 2007.

Melanie works with local authorities every day in her professional life, dealing with council officers and chief executives from all over the UK.  As a result, she understands how to get the best from them for local residents.

She recycles and composts whatever she can. She knows that there is still a lot of smelly stuff that needs to be collected every week. She is committed to sparing Guildford piles of smelly rubbish.

She is committed to kerbside recycling and is impressed with the Conservative-run Guildford Borough Council’s excellent record on recycling waste. We recycled 34% of our waste last year and Melanie knows we can do better.  The council is running   a consultation on new waste collection schemes meant to take us to a full 60% recycling.

Melanie remembers donating blood and taking her kids to shows at the old Civic Hall.  She even bought her kitchen table there!  She looks forward to making sure that the stunning new Civic Hall will have programming and facilities every bit as valuable and exciting as the people in Holy Trinity deserve.

There are only two children’s playgrounds in the ward and the one in Foxenden Quarry can be a little bit intimidating. Melanie wants to see more green space that children in Holy Trinity can use for safe play.

Melanie has always been interested in big issues, which is why she studied politics at university.  That hasn’t stopped her from getting her hands on practical problems like stopping a mobile phone company from building a mast beside a local nursery or organising rubbish and recycling bins by London Road station.

Councillor Graham Ellwood

Surrey County Councillor for Merrow and Burpham

Graham has lived in Merrow for nine years, and runs his own local firm as an independent financial and mortgage adviser. He is a local committee member of the Federation of Small Businesses. His wife Hilary is a teacher at George Abbot School, and he is a regular contributor to the Surrey Advertiser. He was elected as a county councillor in June 2009.

He is committed to improving the value for money that residents in Merrow and Burpham obtain for the council tax they pay. In particular, he will fight to ensure a bigger and fairer share of Central Government funding is rebated to our County. Surrey residents currently receive back less than 5% of the £700 million taxes that we pay to the Government!

Graham will fight to ensure Surrey taxpayers’ money is spent in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible. This may include recommending bringing some council services, such as Highway maintenance, back under County Council Control if greater efficiency and cost effectiveness can be guaranteed. He feels very strongly that the present dreadful state of the County’s roads is in no small part due to the manner in which they are maintained as well as the lack of funding from government.

Further, and as a passionate believer in the importance of child welfare, he will strive to improve the quality levels of social care provided by the County Council in particular to the less able. Those who look after the care needs of all age groups deserve the best support.

As a great supporter of the quality of local education, Graham will ensure that the County’s needs are a top priority as we have so many schools of which we are justifiably proud. However, where school traffic is a problem, as it is in some cases, Graham will work to ensure a better balance between the needs of parents and those residents who live close by.

Although Surrey is a relatively safe county in which to live Graham is dismayed at the prospect of cuts in vital services, such as the police force, caused by the present government’s unfair rebate system which punishes Surrey residents. He will press hard, as is Anne Milton our MP, for Surrey to receive a fairer share of the government tax cake to avoid cuts in vital services.

Graham is utterly opposed to any suggestion of an incinerator in Guildford as well as being keen to ensure the landfill sites, such as Newlands Corner, are properly and safely managed. Finally, Graham is totally committed both to the future of the Royal Surrey Hospital and the need to fight tooth and nail against the South East Plan.

Tony, his wife and now adult daughters have lived in the area for 25 years, the last 12 in Shackleford. A former councillor elsewhere, he is passionate about protecting our countryside and sustaining our rural communities. Tony has also served as the Chairman of Guildford Conservative Association.

After being a solicitor for nearly 30 years, Tony is down to earth and is described by his professional peers as 'level headed, meticulous and technically astute, who tells you the truth, even if it is not what you want to hear'. Tony has worked hard to ensure that you regard him as your councillor in the same light. A Yorkshireman, he has a keen interest in obtaining "value for money" for the people of Guildford and, as "Chancellor of the Exchequer", has kept the borough council's tax increases at or below inflation for the last 5 years. Councillor Nick Sutcliffe

Guildford Borough Councillor for Ash South & Tongham

Nick was first elected as a Borough Councillor for Ash in 1999 and has been a Borough Councillor for Ash South & Tongham since May 2003. Nick has been very active standing up for local interests, most importantly in relation to planning issues.  He has continued to defend the countryside between Ash & Tongham from the risk of large scale development and has also fought off planning applications for inappropriate back garden development in both Ash South & Tongham.  Nick  was Chairman of Guildford Borough’s environment and housing scrutiny committee for over 6 years until May 2010 which has enabled him to keep a close eye on development policy in the new Local Development Framework.  In May 2010 he was appointed as Guildford Borough's executive lead member for environmental services which includes refuse collection, recycling, street cleaning, parks and countryside, as well as all the council's customer service communications.

He was also pleased to play a role in helping Tongham Parish Council secure the final funding contribution it needed to build the new Community Centre.  Planning gain money was secured from a development in Tongham.  Thanks to other funding secured by Nick, a new pedestrian crossing has been installed on the busy Aldershot Road in Ash and off road parking spaces will be added to encourage passing trade for the local convenience store.

A forthcoming project is environmental improvements for Carfax Avenue, following on from the memorial tree planted for the late councillor John Ades.  Funding was approved in 2009 to allow the environmental improvements to proceed.  Nick will also be keeping a close eye on the proposed new flood relief bund to protect Ash Green from heavy rainfall on the Hog’s Back.  This earthwork will cost £120,000 and be paid for by the Borough Council.

Nick spent four years as Chairman of the Ash Parish Council finance committee and successful held expenditure to a steady level between 1999 and 2003, allowing the burden of the parish council tax on the local community to be brought back down to that comparable with other nearby parishes.  Nick also served on the local Community Health Council between 2000 and 2002, having an input on local health service delivery for the area.
