 | Health inequalities in Guildford exposed |
 |
New information from the Department of Health has shed light on the health of people in Guildford. The data shows that although the health of people in Guildford is generally better than the England average there are still concerning health inequalities in the Borough. Information of note includes:
· Female life expectancy in some areas of the borough is around 4 years lower than in other areas. The difference in life expectancy for men is over 6 years.
· The dental health of children in Guildford is better than the England average, but physical activity levels are low.
· An estimated 1 in 5 adults are obese. Hospital stays related to alcohol are low, but nearly 1 in 6 binge drink.
· Smoking accounts for over 140 deaths each year.
Anne Milton, MP for Guildford, said: “These figures make for uncomfortable reading. It is really quite shocking that we have such a wide variation in life expectancy in Guildford. It is clear that successive Governments have not paid enough attention to the prevention of illness or to improving our physical and mental health. One of the Government’s most important aims is to reduce these inequalities by focusing on a pro-active approach to the nation’s health. Prevention is always better than cure and as Minister for Public Health I will do all I can to make Guildford and the UK healthier.”
