Residents express outrage at Tesco's plan for 24 hour alcohol licence

Local Conservative campaigners in Onslow, Dennis Paul and Mike Chambers, have carried out a survey of local opinion regarding Tesco's licensing application to sell liquor around the clock. The initiative was a response to concerns about the effects that the Labour Government's new drink laws may have on neighbouring estates.

Residents of Ashenden & Dennisville have responded to the 'Open All Hours' survey with a clear message to Tesco's.  "We don't want 24 hour liquor sales on our doorstep".

Commenting on the survey, Dennis Paul, Conservative campaigner said "many residents were unaware this licensing application had been submitted to the Council".  He added, "residents, including myself feel that Tesco's could have done more to inform neighbouring residents about their application.  As it happens, Conservatives have taken the lead and initiative to inform local residents ourselves and seek their views.  Sadly, our political opponents on the other hand appear to be indifferent to local concern on this issue".

He added, "the survey results speak for themselves and are indicative of widespread concern.  There is widespread fears that round the clock liquor sales will bring about more noise, anti-social behaviour and vandalism".

90% of respondents to the survey oppose 24 hour licensing at Tesco's; 94% said they were unlikely to purchase alcohol between the hours of 11pm and 8.00am; and 85% felt the licensing extension would result in an increase in crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour".

Local campaigner, Mike Chambers, added, "it's not only the residents who live close to Tesco who could be adversely affected by Tesco selling liquor throughout the night. Public safety across the Borough could be at risk by a potential increase in drink-driving. Sadly, some people are irresponsible when under the influence of alcohol. Intoxicated revellers may decide to drive to Tesco in the early hours to re-stock when the alcohol runs out at a party."

The deadline for objections to the Council closed on 16th August. The application will in due course by considered by the Borough Council's Licensing Committee.
