Anne was born in Sussex in 1955. She was educated at Haywards Heath Grammar School, then trained as a nurse and worked for the NHS for 25 years. She has a wide range of NHS experience in hospitals, as a district nurse and with social housing providers. Anne has 4 children and lives with her husband Graham in Guildford.
Before being elected as MP, Anne was a borough councillor for 5 years in Reigate, serving as Conservative Group Leader. In the past she has been Vice Chairman of the Conservative Medical Society, and when younger was a Steward for the Royal College of Nursing and Chairman of a Branch of the National Childbirth Trust.
Anne won the seat of Guildford in 2005 from the Liberal Democrats by 347 votes and was re-elected in 2010 with a majority of 7,782. She was re-elected again in 2015 with a majority of over 22,000.
Anne is Minister of State at the Department for Education. Prior to this, she was Minister for Public Health in the Coalition Government and then Deputy Chief Whip. Whilst in Opposition she was Shadow Minister for Health, Shadow Minister for Tourism, Gambling and Licensing and sat on the Health Select Committee. In March 2015, Anne was appointed to the Privy Council.
Anne's interests are gardening, reading and she works hard to keep fit.
