From Surrey News

Surrey County Council’s Cabinet met this week and the important announcements are summarised below:

Covid response

Cabinet discussed a report outlining how the council and the Local Resilience Forum responded – and are still responding – to the COVID pandemic.

The report looked at the key lessons learned, and how the council can continue to work with partners to guide the county through the recovery.

The full report is available here.

Cabinet also approved an extra £2m of support for vulnerable families over the summer, including £90 food vouchers for each eligible child. More than 20,000 children have already been supported in this way through previous holidays.

The additional £2m also includes a further allocation to Surrey Crisis Fund, which has already provided over £300,000 worth of support to some of Surrey’s most financially-in-need families.

Waste and Minerals Plan

Cabinet approved to start a consultation on Surrey’s new Waste & Minerals Plan in October. As the planning authority for waste and minerals, the council wants to ensure there are enough minerals for construction and enough waste sites in the right places.

The full report is available here.

River Thames Scheme

Cabinet agreed upon the principles for partnership between the council and the Environment Agency to deliver the River Thames Scheme – the biggest investment in flood alleviation Surrey has ever seen.

The council has committed £237m to the scheme in order to keep homes and businesses safe from flooding.

More information is available here.

A320 infrastructure project

Cabinet looked at the A320 infrastructure project between Ottershaw & Chertsey, and discussed a report on land purchases that are necessary for the scheme to go ahead.

The £42m road improvements will both ease congestion and ensure extra homes can be built in the area, in line with Runnymede Borough Council’s local plan.

Finance

Cabinet approved to continue the agreement between Surrey County Council and Tandridge District Council, which has seen the council’s finance officers support Tandridge’s finance function.

The agreement will be reviewed in 2022 to determine long-term arrangements once the Tandridge Finance Transformation plan is in place.
