Michael has lived in the Borough all his life and in Wonersh since 1988. He is married to Hilary, who between them have four sons and five grandchildren, with twin grandchildren due in November 2011.
He has always been involved in the community, and this involvement has included being a governor of various schools and colleges, such as Godalming College, St Hilary's School, Godalming and Green Oak School where he has served as Chairman. He was awarded the MBE for services to further education. Michael has served as Chairman and Member of the local Citizens' Advice Bureau for over 20 years, and he is currently Chairman of the Godalming Music Festival as well as a Trustee of Godalming Museum and Surrey Jobmatch.
Michael has served on the Borough Council for periods totalling 16 years since 1987, representing parts of Godalming as well as Wonersh and Blackheath and was Borough Mayor in 2001/2002. He also served on Godalming Town Council from 1973 - 2007 (and was Town Mayor 1987/88). His interests in local government include planning and the environment. Since 2023, Michael has served as Waverley Borough Councillor for Bramley and Wonersh Ward.
He is a solicitor by profession and is the senior partner of a local firm, as well as being a Deputy District Judge. Michael's interests include gardening and DIY. He is also a keen Rotarian, having been in Round Table and is a Liveryman in the City.
